Deanna goes for therapyā Chemotherapy, that is. Treatment three of six.
The nurse has prepared her corner: A quiet nook in a semi-circular room. The beds curve around like islands in an open sea. Nurses move with practiced grace, Each one trailing her important-looking cart.
Then, across the roomā Someone finishes their final session.
They ring the bell. The victory bell. It’s clear, defiant chime slices the air.
And suddenlyā Tears of hope Ride the sound waves Straight to Deannaās eyes.
When Elders Weep and Youth Shout
In first-generation churches, young people lead the chargeā zealous, full of joy, grateful to be free from old wineskins.
But in long-established churches, a different scene often unfolds. Youāll find elders sitting quietly⦠and sometimes, deeply sad.
Why?
Because they remember glory.
Tongues that interceded
Prophetic words that read your mail
People overcome by the Spirit
Healings
Charismatic renewal
The Jesus People Movement
The Vineyard
Toronto Blessing
Brownsville⦠and more
They remember when Godās presence would undo a room.
Today, the music may be louder, the tech more refinedā But something inside whispers: Itās not the same.
This Has Happened Before
āAnd all the people shouted with a great shout of joy… Yet many of the old men who had seen the first temple wept… so that the people could not distinguish the sound of the shout of joy from the sound of the weeping.ā āEzra 3:11ā13
One moment. Two generations. Two very different responses.
And Scripture tells usā God blessed all of it. The tears. The shouting. The emotion rising like incense.
But Then… a Plot Twist
Soon after, local Samaritansā mixed-race people who also worshiped Yahwehā offered to help rebuild the temple.
The elders said, āNo.ā
Maybe it was fear. Maybe zeal for purity. But that decision led to decades of resistance and delay (Ezra 4:1ā24).
They wept for gloryābut missed what God was doing now. They protected the pastāand choked the future.
Sound familiar?
10 Responses to Sadness ā A Redemptive Progression
How do we respond to loss, disappointment, or spiritual dryness?
Here are 10 responses to deep sadnessāmoving from reaction to restoration:
Blame ā āItās the leadersā fault.ā āThis church has changed.ā
Anger ā When grief wears the mask of rage, disgust, or contempt.
Withdrawal ā Hearts disengage before bodies do.
Numbing ā Busyness, entertainment, or overindulgence to quiet the ache.
Grumbling & Gossip ā Rehearsing pain in echo chambers.
Spiritualizing (without feeling) ā Quoting Scripture to sidestep sorrow.
Giving Up ā āRevival is over. Thereās nothing more.ā
Seeking Wise Counsel ā Inviting Spirit-filled voices to walk with you.
Taking Ownership ā Honest self-reflection and openness to change.
Repentance & Response ā Turning sorrow into surrender: āāāLord, I donāt want to miss what Youāre doing now!ā
A Way Forward ā Together
Iāve seen churches rise, fracture, renew, and thrive.
Here in the Amazon, weāve lasted long enough to watch third- and fourth-generation pastors riseāhungry for God, eager to serve.
So Iām asking:
How do we help the young stay on fireāwithout settling for less?
Three Practices for Generational Health
š„ Older leaders can recount what God has doneāand cheer others on. š„ Younger leaders can burn brightlyāand stay curious about historyās lessons. š„ Everyone can walk in humilityāchoosing honour over control, servanthood over spotlight.
Because biblical righteousness is about right relationships:
With God
With one another
Across generations
Jesus Showed Us the Way
He didnāt grab for power. He gave it away. He stayed with His peopleāthrough thick and thin. He led by surrender.
And in that obedience, God raised Him up.
Letās Lead Like Jesus
Letās be builders again. Letās bless the fire in young heartsāand let it warm us, too. Letās not just remember revival. Letās help the next generation participate in their visitation.
This Is True
Thereās a joy that overflowsāavailable now.
Thereās peace that surpasses understandingāeven in the wilderness.
Thereās a river of living waterāready to flow when we tap the Source.
God is on the move. Letās move with Him.
Letās help the next generation participate in their visitation.
Deanna’s Journey to Healing
I feel Godās help so deep as I continue to get good news and feel the prayers of so many surrounding me !
We have more good news this week. Another ultrasound was requestedāfor clarity about progress.
The affected areas are all improving.
āGod is a safe place to hide, Ready to help when we need him… …Jacob-wrestling God fights for us, God-of-Angel-Armies protects us” (āāPsalms⬠ā46ā¬:ā1ā¬-ā3⬠āMSG).
